ATEX is an abbreviation for ATmosphère EXplosibles (from French for Explosive Atmospheres). It previously combined two European Union directives to define environments where there was a risk of explosion. In the E.U. ATEX approval is required for equipment to be used in potentially explosive environments. Generally, these hazardous areas are found in the oil and gas, pharmaceutical, and woodworking industries, but they can occur virtually anywhere if processes or circumstances permit.
